4 Documentaries to Watch Now on Netflix Instant Queue

August 17th, 2010

I love a good documentary.  Here are a few I’ve caught recently – all of which are available to stream on Netflix Instant Queue.  All four share a common theme – telling a tale of some of the most interesting real-life people I’ve ever seen on camera.

Check them out!

I Like Killing Flies – 2004
About a hard-nosed vulgar restaurant owner in Greenwich Village.  As New York as it gets.  I like this guy.

The King of Kong – 2007
An absolute classic.  One word to describe Billy Mitchell?  Awesome.  The tale of Donkey Kong and competitive arcade gaming.

Cocaine Cowboys – 2006
The shocking tale of literally why Miami exists today and of the cocaine epidemic in the 1980′s – super interesting.

Confessions of a Superhero – 2007
You’ve seen these people in Vegas, NYC, Bourbon Street all the way to your local shopping malls.  The tale of L.A. street performers (dorky ones, at that) and their struggles.

Here’s the end clip of I Like Killing Flies. Dude’s awesome: “You’re not good., You’re not so terriffic.”

Ford’s 1954 Technique for Tomorrow – Brook Park, Ohio

March 23rd, 2010

I uploaded a video from my personal collection to YouTube that I find to be very interesting.  An Americana/Post-War propaganda video filmed exclusively in Brook Park, Ohio in the early fifties.  The American Dream is in full effect – the good life of making an excellent product and earning a decent wage.

The music, film, machines, industry, and culture are all captivating.  It shows highlights of workers from Cleveland Heights and surrounding cities, participating in the birth of the middle class.  It portrays Cleveland as a power house in the industrial movement.

How things have changed:

How to Fix “The Mistake On The Lake” and Other Once-Great American Cities

March 15th, 2010

I’ve always been a big fan of Drew Carey.  He’s had a great career to date and still continues to host The Price is Right.  He’s always been a loyal Clevelander and I think does a lot for the city.

For his latest project, he’s teamed up with the folks at Reason TV to make a mini-series on “fixing” Cleveland; the first episode launched today and a new episode will be released each day this week!

Episode 1: The Decline of a Once-Great City (March 15)

Global Warming vs. Snow Storms

February 16th, 2010

This has been going on for a few weeks now; every conservative media outlet is denouncing the claim of global warming because it’s snowing in Winter.

I won’t get into the debate, but this video pretty much makes those individuals/organizations look like asshats.

If anything, show some love for Bill Nye “The Science Guy.”

Late Night’s Best Breaks Down The NBC Debacle

January 16th, 2010

I had bookmarked countless videos regarding the drama around the NBC Tonight Show this past week to catch up on this weekend, but became bored as I made my way through them.  Spend 5 minutes and watch the best late night host on any time slot and network break down the situation, David Letterman:

Why Live Nation, House of Blues, and Radio 92.3 Cleveland Suck Hard

January 9th, 2010

Anyone who knows me personally understands my extreme distaste for all things in and related to the “main-stream” music scene.  Attack this introduction statement however you may, but the following is one of the MANY reasons why.

I’ll start by reminding you of the 12/2007 – present day recession that the US currently finds itself in as well as the common belief that it was caused by large creditors and banks abused by a population who charges everything; blindly chasing the American Dream only aiding to the collapse of the American Economy.  Consider this with the huge news story this past week which was Arianna Hufftington’s blog about moving your money away from the large banks (i.e. Citi) to help limit their power.

Enough about all that – fast forward to this morning…  I found out yesterday from a friend (who heard from Radio 92.3) that Passion Pit, the electronic indie pop band from Cambridge, would be in Cleveland playing a show in March.  “Terrific”, I thought – a band that I really enjoy (see #1 here) is coming to Cleveland – with low ticket prices, to boot!

Tickets went on sale this morning at 10am.  I hopped on the Live Nation website only to find that the only way to buy tickets is with a promo code.  Presales and promos aren’t anything new – however this presale code was the first 6-digits of your Citi Credit card, and labeled as such.

I thought fast, all credit cards have a specific 6 digit prefix, much like checking accounts and routing numbers.  Since all Citi cards have the same 6-digit prefix, I Google’d it, and sure enough found what I was looking for.  I pasted in the found 6 digit code and voila – I was in.  Pretty bogus system, right?  Wrong.  I was able to make my way through the ticket pre-purchase process; creating an account, shipping & billing info, et al.  Upon payment, I used my Visa CheckCard:  “ERROR: The Credit Card does not match the code used in the promo.”

To buy tickets to see Passion Pit any day before the day of the show, you have to have a Citi credit card.  You can’t pay cash, check, or even use any other credit card/checkcard.  This is absolutely insulting.  Leave it to Live Nation, an despicable radio station and a shitty-franchise of chain venues (HOB) to allow and condone this type of system.

Items that are used to promote signing up for credit cards:

  • Cheap Passion Pit tickets
  • Free Plastic Indians baseball helmets at Progressive Field
  • Free T-shirts on college campuses
  • Discounts at retailers, “Save 25% right now by signing up”

UPDATE: A friend of mine has a Citi card and we have obtained our tickets.  Thanks to her choice of bank, we can enjoy our music as allowed by Radio 92.3 / Live Nation / Citi / The HOB.  Shame on Passion Pit (their agents and label) for being a part of this system too.  Fuck y’all.

If there’s anything more hilarious than The Daily Show it’s The Daily Show’s best clips for entire year packed into a 3 minute clip.  Hilarious:
